Headline: Captain 'Quack' Sparrow Triumphs In River Thames Duck Race
Caption: A giant rubber duck named ‘Captain Quack Sparrow’ took home the honours in a duck race held on the River Thames. The piratical bath toy was the leading entry in a competition held on the river for Staines-upon-Thames Day on Sunday (30June2024). Local businesses submitted creatively designed ducks for the event, which raises funds for the local charity MidasPlus. The winning duck, designed to resemble Johnny Depp's character from the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, won the top prize for best design. MidasPlus, managed by four dedicated unpaid volunteers, supports individuals and groups facing physical or learning difficulties and financial hardship across the Spelthorne and Runnymede boroughs, which sit on the outskirts of London. To date, the charity has donated over £200,000 for these local causes. In addition to the main competition, a smaller race was held for children and individuals who could purchase their own ducks to race. The winner of this race received a £100 voucher for a local Staines restaurant. The event is the climax to a huge day for the area in which locals come together to build a sense of community and raise funds for good causes.
