Headline: Ukraine deploys armed robot in combat from marine drone in world first

According to Ukrainian military officials, the DevDroid robot landed on the Russian-held Kinburn Spit and deployed in combat. They described it as the first known operation of its kind anywhere in the world. The unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) was equipped with a Wolly 7.62 remotely operated weapon station, DevDroid's press service told RBC-Ukraine on 14 July. The Wolly 7.62 is built around a PKM-pattern machine gun and is designed for combat and reconnaissance missions in challenging environments. Its remote-control system enables an operator to monitor the battlefield and fire the weapon from a safer location. The turret-mounted KT-7.62 machine gun can engage targets at ranges of up to 1,000 metres (0.6 miles). Artificial intelligence assists the operator with target acquisition during firing. The system is intended primarily for remote battlefield surveillance and engaging unarmoured or otherwise exposed targets. According to the Ukrainian military, the UGV was carried to the occupied shoreline of the Kinburn Spit then sent on a combat mission. The operation was led by Colonel Oleh Makukha, commander of Ukraine's 123rd Separate Territorial Defence Brigade, and Major Denys Hipik, commander of the brigade's 1st Unmanned Systems Battalion. “This is the first combat mission of its kind known to us anywhere in the world: an unmanned ground vehicle was delivered to an enemy-held shore by an uncrewed maritime platform, landed on the occupied territory of our native region, and used to carry out a combat mission,” the brigade said. DevDroid spokespeople added: “This is a demonstration of a new approach to modern warfare, where robotic systems perform the most dangerous tasks, reducing the risk for the Ukrainian military.” The announcement follows another reported use of a Ukrainian unmanned ground combat system equipped with a machine gun to help repel a Russian assault on a frontline position. According to the Ukrainian military, the system first detected and destroyed two Russian "waiting" drones positioned near a road leading towards Ukrainian positions before opening fire on advancing Russian infantry.
