Headline: RAW VIDEO: Ukraine's War Poets Pay Tribute To Britain On World Poetry Day

Caption: Ukrainian military poets marked World Poetry day on Friday (21March2025) by recording their own version of the poem Invictus by William Ernest Henley in tribute to the United Kingdom and its support of their country following Russia’s full scale invasion in 2022. In a statement, Ukrainian officials said: “It is our way to honour the United Kingdom for its ongoing support of Ukraine in the full-scale war, and to remind everyone that the fight for freedom against tyranny continues.” The poem of resilience and strength holds special resonance as it was referenced by Winston Churchill during World War II. In a speech to the House of Commons on 9 September 1941, Winston Churchill paraphrased the last two lines of the poem, stating "We are still masters of our fate. We still are captains of our souls." The speech came during a darker period of the war when Nazi forces had taken control of Ukraine during their invasion of the Soviet Union, leaving the fate of the war in the balance.
