At the heart of the presentation is the close-to-production version of the new BMW iDrive, which features the innovative BMW Panoramic Vision as its centrepiece. This advanced system is powered by the newly developed BMW Operating System X and will be integrated into all new BMW models starting at the end of 2025. Frank Weber, BMW AG’s Board Member for Development, commented: “High-tech meets highly intuitive operation. After 25 years of pioneering innovation in user interfaces, we are once again setting the standard with the new BMW Panoramic iDrive. With BMW Operating System X, we’ve created one of the most advanced and user-friendly infotainment systems in the industry.” The BMW Panoramic Vision redefines the in-car display experience, projecting essential driving information across the lower windscreen from A-pillar to A-pillar. Visible to all occupants, the system creates a 3D effect for both drivers and passengers, enhancing navigation, driving assistance, and personalisation options. The system also introduces the optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display, which overlays navigation and automation information directly in the driver’s line of sight. Combined with the central touchscreen and multifunction steering wheel, the iDrive system seamlessly integrates physical and digital controls. The new iDrive is a perfect example of BMW’s “hands on the wheel, eyes on the road” philosophy. Key functions such as windscreen wipers, indicators, and volume controls remain physical switches for ease of use, while voice and touch controls manage advanced features. The BMW Operating System X serves as the intelligence hub behind this advanced user experience. Built on an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software stack, it offers enhanced update capabilities and long-term compatibility. Its integration allows seamless interaction between various components, including navigation, personalisation, and third-party apps such as Zoom. BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, accessible via voice command or steering wheel controls, adds another layer of convenience. The assistant leverages large language models (LLMs) to enable natural language commands, such as 'Find a charging station near a food store.' Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President of BMW Group Design, noted: “The new BMW Panoramic iDrive transforms every BMW into a personalised driving companion. It combines cutting-edge technology with an emotional, human-centred design.” The system is part of BMW’s Neue Klasse platform, which incorporates innovative sound design, including the HypersonX sound experience. This system adapts audio cues to the driving situation, enhancing the emotional connection between the driver and vehicle.
