Headline: RAW VIDEO: Judy Garland's Ruby Slippers Worth £4 Million To Go On Show In The UK

Caption: An original pair of ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz that could be worth up to £4 million is set to go on display in London later this month (November2024). The iconic red sequin shoes, famously clicked together in the film’s climactic scene as Garland’s Dorothy declares, “There’s no place like home,” are one of just four surviving pairs made for the 1939 classic - and experts have said they are the best preserved. Like your old P.E. kit they even have Judy Garland’s name written on the inside. The slippers will be exhibited at Heritage Auctions’ London offices on Hanover Street from 28 November for several days, part of an international tour showcasing treasures of Hollywood history. The tour culminates in Los Angeles on 7 December, where the shoes will be auctioned with a guide price of £2.3 million to £3.8 million. Designed by MGM costume chief Gilbert Adrian, the ruby slippers are constructed from dark red sequins sewn in diagonal strips across the fabric. Inside each shoe, “Judy Garland” is written in black pen along the seam. This particular pair was rediscovered in an MGM warehouse after the studio's sale in 1969 and was stolen during a 2005 exhibition at the Judy Garland Museum in Minnesota. Recovered by the FBI in 2018, the slippers have since been reunited with their owner, who has chosen to sell them. Heritage Auctions’ Joe Maddalena described the shoes as "the most important prop in Hollywood history." As Rhys Thomas, author of The Ruby Slippers of Oz, noted, the slippers "transcend Hollywood," representing "a powerful image of innocence." The Wizard of Oz, based on L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, remains one of the most beloved films in cinema history. Preserved in the US Library of Congress's National Film Registry, the film has left a lasting legacy, inspiring adaptations such as the hit musical Wicked. The upcoming auction and exhibition offer fans and collectors a rare chance to see and potentially own these timeless relics of Hollywood’s golden age.
