Caption: Global Obesity Crisis Looms: Over Half of Adults Projected to be Overweight by 2050. More than 50% of adults and a third of young people worldwide are predicted to be overweight or obese by 2050, according to a new study published in The Lancet. Researchers warn that obesity rates will accelerate rapidly in the coming years, especially in lower-income countries, putting immense pressure on healthcare systems. The study shows that nearly half of the global adult population—1 billion men and 1.11 billion women—were already overweight or obese by 2021, a rate that has doubled since 1990. If current trends continue, 57.4% of men and 60.3% of women will be overweight or obese by 2050, with China (627 million), India (450 million), and the U.S. (214 million) leading in numbers. Sub-Saharan Africa is projected to see a 250% surge in obesity rates, with Nigeria alone expected to triple its overweight population to 141 million by 2050. The study does not account for the impact of new weight loss medications, which could alter these projections, but experts stress that urgent government action is needed. Prof. Emmanuela Gakidou, who led the research, described the crisis as "a profound tragedy and a monumental societal failure" that requires immediate intervention. Obesity is rising fastest among young people, with childhood and adolescent obesity rates doubling between 1990 and 2021. By 2050, one in three young people will be affected. Dr. Jessica Kerr, co-lead of the study, says governments must act now to prevent a "global obesity transition" and the devastating health and financial consequences that would follow. Experts emphasize that targeted prevention strategies, particularly for at-risk regions like North America, Oceania, and the Middle East, are crucial to curbing the epidemic before it wo.
