Caption: Influx of Migrants at US-Mexico Border Takes Spotlight Ahead of Elections. BBC reports that migrant arrivals at the U.S.-Mexico border have reached record highs, posing a problem for the Biden administration. According to recent polls, over two-thirds of people in the U.S. don't approve of the current administration's handling of the border issue. The influx of migrants has upset both Republicans and Democrats as cities across the country struggle to cope with rising numbers. Under the Biden administration, over 6.3 million migrants have been detained while attempting to illegally enter the U.S., a higher number than the previous three administrations. BBC reports that numbers have steadily been on the rise since 2021, reaching an all-time high of over 302,000 in December of last year. The greatest increase in migrants from outside the Americas comes from China, with over 37,000 Chinese nationals detained in 2023, 50 times higher than two years prior. "We are experiencing displacement around the world at a level never seen in recorded history, and people are turning up at our southern border for a variety of different reasons." "There are four failed states in our hemisphere alone." Jorge Loweree, managing director of programs at the American Immigration Council, via BBC. BBC points out that the last major overhaul of the system came over 30 years ago. Meanwhile, the latest bipartisan bill looking to address the issue of the U.S. border was doomed as the result of widespread congressional GOP opposition.
