Caption: Spain Records Hottest May Sea Temperatures on Record. Spain recorded its highest-ever sea temperatures for May across much of its coastline, according to the country’s port authority. Twelve of 15 deep-water monitoring buoys registered record temperatures for the month, alongside six of 14 coastal buoys. The figures highlight unusually warm conditions in Spanish waters during May. AEMET spokesperson Rubén del Campo said human-caused climate change was driving the long-term warming trend. Del Campo noted that over the past decade Spain has experienced just seven record-breaking cold days compared with 221 record-breaking hot days. He said the imbalance reflects a continuing rise in global average temperatures. The warming comes as the United Nations forecasts a moderate to potentially strong El Niño event in the months ahead. However, meteorologists said May’s record sea temperatures were not linked to El Niño, which is expected to develop in the Pacific later this year and peak around October and November.
