Caption: Fast-Food Chains Pull Fresh Onions Amid E. Coli Outbreak. Several fast-food chains, including McDonald’s, Burger King, KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell have removed fresh onions from their menus in parts of the U.S. following an E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald’s. The outbreak has resulted in one death and 49 illnesses, leading McDonald’s to pull its quarter pounder from about 20% of its U.S. locations. The onions, believed to be the source of the outbreak, were supplied by Taylor Farms in California. Regulators are now investigating whether beef patties could also be affected though properly cooked beef kills E. coli, unlike the raw onions used in the quarter pounder. The burger has been removed from restaurants across multiple states, including Colorado, Kansas, and Utah. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control reported illnesses between September 27 and October 11, with at least ten hospitalizations, including a child with severe kidney complications.
