Caption: Former Thailand PM Thaksin Shinawatra Released After Turbulent Prison Saga. Thailand’s former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra was released from prison after serving eight months of a reduced one-year sentence tied to corruption cases during his 2001–2006 tenure. The release marks another dramatic chapter in the turbulent political career of the billionaire telecoms tycoon, whose presence has divided Thai politics for two decades. Thaksin returned to Thailand in 2023 after 15 years abroad, initially facing an eight-year prison term that was later reduced by royal clemency. But controversy intensified when he sought medical treatment out of prison. The Supreme Court ruled that his prolonged stay in hospital had been unjustified and ordered him back to prison. Hundreds of supporters dressed in the signature red colours of the Shinawatra political movement gathered outside Bangkok’s Klong Prem prison to greet him with chants and flowers. Despite the warm reception from loyalists, analysts say Thaksin’s influence has weakened considerably following his party’s poor performance in recent elections. His daughter, former prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, was removed from office less than a year ago. Under the terms of his parole, the 76-year-old must wear an electronic ankle monitor, remain under probation supervision until September, and regularly report to authorities.
