Ukraine says it carried out a long-range drone attack on an oil terminal in St. Petersburg ahead of Russia’s flagship economic forum. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the strike also targeted military facilities at the Kronstadt naval base, around 1,100 kilometres from Ukraine. The attack took place as the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum got underway. Ukrainian officials said the operation involved the Security Service of Ukraine, special forces and military intelligence units. Russian authorities confirmed drone attacks on several districts of St. Petersburg and reported damage to infrastructure as well as injuries. Local investigators said videos from the scene appeared to show explosions near the city’s major oil terminal, although Russian officials did not confirm a direct hit. Zelensky recently claimed Ukrainian strikes have put about 40% of Russia’s oil refining capacity out of action this year. Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže said the latest attack highlighted growing pressure on Russia as it seeks to showcase economic resilience at the forum.
