Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has resigned after his right-wing bloc narrowly lost the country's general election to the centre-left opposition. Preliminary results showed the opposition bloc winning 176 seats in the 349-seat Riksdag, compared with 173 for Kristersson's alliance. Around 50,000 votes separated the two blocs, with the results due to be formally certified in the coming days. Kristersson said his resignation would allow the Speaker of Parliament to immediately begin the process of forming a new government. Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson declared that voters had chosen a "new direction" and is expected to seek a return as prime minister. Andersson has opened talks with the Left, Centre and Green parties, although significant policy differences could complicate negotiations. Kristersson’s bloc included the Moderates, Sweden Democrats, Christian Democrats and Liberals, with the Sweden Democrats previously providing outside support to his government. The Sweden Democrats lost support for the first time since entering parliament in 2010, falling around three percentage points compared with the 2022 election.
