Caption: Scotland's Famous Pygmy Hippo Haggis Is Venturing Outside. Haggis, the Scottish pygmy hippo calf who took the internet by storm this winter, has ventured outside for the first time. She was born on Wednesday 30 October, and was quickly dubbed Britain’s answer to fellow viral pygmy hippo sensation Moo Deng. Shortly after her birth, Jonny Appleyard, hoofstock team leader at Edinburgh Zoo, said: “Haggis is doing really well so far and it is amazing to see her personality beginning to shine already.” Visitors to the wildlife conservation charity’s zoo can now get a glimpse of Haggis as she becomes bolder, spending more time each day exploring outside with mum Gloria. Pygmy hippos are native to the forests and swamps of West Africa, primarily Liberia. The species is classified as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and it is estimated that just 2,500 remain in the wild due to habitat loss.
