In the closing minutes of the match at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López, De Miguel was challenging for the ball when goalkeeper Jesús Owono struck him full force in the chest. De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch and was taken to the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria. The match was subsequently abandoned. Although the club initially described his condition in intensive care as stable, his neurological condition deteriorated dramatically on Tuesday morning.
