Caption: Hungary Parliament Votes To Remove President From Office. Hungary’s parliament has voted to remove President Tamás Sulyok from office after Prime Minister Péter Magyar's Tisza party approved a constitutional amendment. The amendment also removes Constitutional Court head Péter Polt and passed with the government's two-thirds parliamentary majority. Sulyok now has five days to sign the amendment, refer it to the Constitutional Court or resign to avoid a constitutional crisis. Péter Magyar warned he would launch impeachment proceedings if Sulyok sends the amendment to the Constitutional Court. Opposition lawmakers from Viktor Orbán's Fidesz party walked out before the vote, accusing the government of creating a tyranny. The amendment also removes Constitutional Court judges over 70 and bars MPs who have served three terms from standing again, affecting many Fidesz lawmakers. Former Supreme Court chief András Baka supported removing Sulyok, arguing Hungary's institutions had been captured under Orbán's rule. The vote comes after Magyar's Tisza party defeated Orbán's Fidesz in April, with the government planning to introduce a new constitution within the next few years.
