Caption: Democrats Win Control Of Congress In Major Midterm Defeat For Trump. Democrats have won control of both the US Senate and House of Representatives in a major setback for President Donald Trump. The midterm election results give Democrats control of Congress for the remaining two years of Trump's presidency. Democrats secured Senate victories in traditionally Republican states, including Texas, Ohio and Kansas, which had not elected a Democrat to the chamber for almost a century. In Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed claimed victory, becoming the first Muslim elected to the US Senate. Trump acknowledged the defeat, saying Democrats had "done a good job", and admitted the Iran war and rising fuel prices had contributed to Republican losses. Cost-of-living concerns also weighed heavily on voters. With control of both chambers, Democrats will be able to block much of Trump's legislative agenda and could pursue further impeachment proceedings.
