Caption: King Charles Calls Slave Trade A 'Shameful Chapter' At Commonwealth Summit. King Charles III has described the transatlantic slave trade as a "shameful chapter of history" during a Commonwealth summit in Antigua and Barbuda. Addressing leaders from 56 nations, the King said the slave trade still cast a shadow over Commonwealth countries and filled him with "profound personal sorrow”. The monarch acknowledged learning more about slavery's legacy and called for modern partnerships to address historical injustices through future action. Despite growing calls for Britain to formally apologise for its role in the slave trade, the King's speech stopped short of an apology. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said his government was open to a formal apology but ruled out paying financial reparations. Burnham instead pledged continued support for Commonwealth countries through development assistance, debt relief efforts and green finance. The King also addressed global conflicts, climate change and technological developments during the summit of Commonwealth leaders. The speech came during the King and Queen's Caribbean tour, which included visits to the Bahamas and a historic slave rebellion site in Guyana.
