Headline: UNCAPTIONED: US Charges Raúl Castro Over 1996 Plane Shootdown

Caption: US Charges Raúl Castro Over 1996 Plane Shootdown. The United States has officially charged former Cuban leader Raúl Castro over the 1996 shootdown of two civilian planes operated by the anti-communist group Brothers to the Rescue. US prosecutors accuse Castro and five others of conspiracy to kill American citizens, destruction of aircraft, and multiple murder charges linked to the deaths of four men, including three Americans. At the time of the incident, Castro was Cuba’s defense chief. The attack triggered international outrage after Cuban fighter jets shot down the planes over waters between Cuba and Florida. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the US “will not forget its citizens,” while President Donald Trump backed the move amid growing pressure on Cuba’s communist government. Current Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel called the charges politically motivated and claimed Cuba acted in self-defense. Although Castro is unlikely to be extradited, US officials confirmed there is now an arrest warrant for the 94-year-old former leader.
