According to Dr Charlotte Norton, Chief Medical Officer of The Slimming Clinic, the UK's largest online weight loss clinic, menopausal weight gain may be common, but it doesn't have to be inevitable. ”Menopause weight gain affects so many women because of the drop in oestrogen levels," Dr Norton says. ”Our fluctuating hormone levels can affect the way that our bodies are storing fat and the way our body manages food can also change during menopause, meaning we burn less calories than we did pre-menopause.” The expert adds that the weight gained during menopause is often not evenly distributed throughout the body. ”Where pre-menopause, your weight would more-or-less evenly distribute across our whole body, when we enter the menopause, our weight tends to gather around the middle as visceral fat, and crucially, around our vital organs, which can prove to be dangerous.” Dr Norton has shared her tips for managing your weight while going through menopause. Eat a balanced diet. ”Make sure that you are getting at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day and that your meals are nutritious and healthy," the medical officer suggests, before advising that you avoid takeaways and sugary drinks.” Watch your alcohol intake. ”(You) can add hundreds of calories to your diet each time you have a glass of wine. Limiting the amount of alcohol you drink will help halt too much weight gain.” Keep moving. ”It can be really tempting to reduce your exercise when your muscles and joints ache more, but keeping up your activity not only helps with your weight loss, but your mobility too.” Keep stress levels low. The expert states: "This is easier said than done in a lot of cases, but stress releases the hormone cortisol, which can lead to more abdominal fat deposits. During high-stress times, we can also turn to food for comfort and find ourselves falling into unhealthy habits again.” Instructions: THIS VIDEO MUST NOT BE EDITED FOR LENGTH TO COMBINE WITH OTHER CONTENT
