Caption: Mia Love, First Black Republican Congresswoman, Dies at 49. Mia Love, the first Black Republican congresswoman in U.S. history, has died at the age of 49 at her home in Saratoga Springs, Utah. Her family announced that she passed away peacefully on Sunday, surrounded by loved ones, after battling brain cancer. Love was diagnosed in 2022 with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, and exceeded the 10–15-month prognosis doctors had given her. Earlier this month, her daughter Abigale revealed that Love had stopped responding to treatment. Born to Haitian immigrants, Love began her political career in 2003 on the Saratoga Springs city council and became mayor at age 34. In 2014, she made history by becoming the first Black Republican woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Utah for two terms. Her political career in Congress ended in 2018 after a narrow defeat to Democrat Ben McAdams. Just two weeks before her death, Love wrote a heartfelt opinion piece for Deseret News to express gratitude and share her vision for America. Utah Governor Spencer Cox praised her as a trailblazer and visionary leader, saying she inspired many through her courage and belief in the American dream. Love’s family described her passing as “quietly slipping the bands of mortality” while celebrating a life filled with joy and purpose.
