Caption: Australia Introduces Mandatory Jail for Nazi Salutes and Hate Crimes. Australia has passed its toughest-ever hate crime laws, introducing mandatory jail terms for displaying hate symbols, performing Nazi salutes, and terror-related offences, BBC News reports. The amendments, approved on Thursday, come amid a rise in high-profile antisemitic attacks and heated national debate on how to address hate crimes. Under the new laws, performing a Nazi salute or displaying hate symbols carries a minimum one-year prison sentence, while financing terrorism is punishable with at least three years, and planning or committing terror acts with six years. The ruling Labor Party, which historically opposed mandatory sentencing, faced criticism from within its ranks for reversing its stance. Former senator Kim Carr called it a “clear breach” of party policy. Opposition parties accused the government of being slow to act, with Liberal senator James Paterson claiming Labor was “dragged kicking and screaming” to introduce the tougher penalties. The Nazi salute and related hate symbols had already been banned in January 2024, carrying a maximum one-year jail term. The new amendments make that sentence mandatory. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke defended the changes, saying they ensure hate crimes targeting individuals based on race, religion, or sexual orientation are taken seriously. Australia has seen several antisemitic attacks in recent months, including a caravan filled with explosives and hate messages in Sydney, and arson targeting a childcare centre near a Jewish school. In December, a Melbourne synagogue was set on fire while worshippers were inside. Though no serious injuries were reported, the attack sent shockwaves across the country. The new laws aim to curb rising hate crimes and reinforce Australia’s stance against extremism, but they remain a divisive issue in national politics.
