Headline: UNCAPTIONED: Google Scraps Diversity-Based Hiring Targets Amid Policy Review

Caption: Google Scraps Diversity-Based Hiring Targets Amid Policy Review. Google is eliminating its hiring goals for underrepresented groups and reassessing its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, following a broader trend of U.S. businesses scaling back diversity programs, Reuters reports. In an email to staff, Alphabet’s chief people officer, Fiona Cicconi, stated that while the company had set hiring targets in 2020, "we will no longer have aspirational goals" moving forward. The shift marks a significant departure from Google's previous commitment to inclusivity, which intensified after the 2020 protests against police violence and racial injustice. CEO Sundar Pichai had previously set a target for 30% of leadership hires to come from underrepresented groups by 2025, but Alphabet has not released updated progress figures. Google’s annual SEC filing omitted language stating its commitment to making DEI a core part of company operations, a phrase that had appeared in reports from 2021 to 2024. The Alphabet Workers Union criticized the move, calling it "an attack on gains workers have made in the tech industry" and linking it to a broader right-wing push against diversity efforts. As a federal contractor, Google is also reviewing President Donald Trump’s new policies limiting DEI initiatives in government and federal contracting, adjusting its programs to comply with recent legal decisions. Despite the rollback, Google will continue supporting internal employee groups such as "Trans at Google," the "Black Googler Network," and the "Disability Alliance," which have influenced company policies. Other tech giants, including Meta and Amazon, have also scaled back their DEI initiatives, ending diversity-focused hiring, training, and supplier selection programs. Conservative groups, bolstered by the 2023 Supreme Court ruling against affirmative action in college admissions, have ramped up legal threats against companies implementing DEI initiatives.
