Caption: Zakia Khudadadi's Paralympic Milestone First Refugee Paralympic Team Medallist. Zakia Khudadadi made history at the Paris Paralympics, becoming the first Refugee Paralympic Team medallist. Khudadadi won bronze in the women’s -47kg taekwondo category, after defeating Turkey’s Ekinci Nurcihan. Overjoyed, she threw her helmet and mouthpiece into the air. 'It was a surreal moment,' she said. Khudadadi was blocked from competing by the Taliban in 2021, but later evacuated and competed for Afghanistan in Tokyo. After settling in Paris, she joined the Refugee Team at the 2024 Paralympics. Supported by the crowd, she fought for victory. Training at France’s national institute of sport, her coach Haby Niare praised her resilience despite injuries. ”Zakia has been magical. She faced injuries but never lost sight of her goal." Haby Niare. Her bronze medal was presented by the UNHCR and International Paralympic Committee, a moment of triumph for refugees. ”Zakia just showed to the world how good she is.
