The ferry was carrying 259 passengers and eight crew members from Kyreneia to the Turkish port of Taşucu when it began taking on water. Turkey’s Interior Ministry said the vessel encountered trouble around six kilometres off the coast of Kyreneia before sinking. Turkish Cypriot President Tufan Erhürman said rescuers had reached 244 people, while 17 remained unaccounted for. Footage circulating on social media appeared to show passengers wearing life jackets sitting on the overturned vessel awaiting rescue. Kyreneia Mayor Murat Senkul described the situation as "very serious," as search-and-rescue operations continued. Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides said the Republic of Cyprus was ready to provide immediate assistance using all available resources.
