Headline: UNCAPTIONED: Age spots: Everything you need to know

Caption: As we get older, many of us will develop age spots on our skin for a number of reasons, including exposure to the sun. Margot Grant Witz, Vice President of luxury skincare company Elizabeth Grant International Inc. explains why we get age spots and what we can do about it. Sun exposure: the main culprit The most common cause of age spots is sun exposure. "Age spots commonly show up on the face, hands, shoulders, and arms in areas more likely to be exposed to Ultraviolet (UV) Light either due to sun exposure or sunbeds, leaving us with these unwelcome spots.”. "UV rays from the sun penetrate the skin, prompting melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour, to increase as a natural defence mechanism.". "However, over time and with excessive exposure, the higher concentrations of melanin can clump, causing these dark spots to appear.". The ageing factor These pesky spots often develop with age because our skin regenerates more slowly as we get older. "As we grow older, changes occur in our skin that impair its ability to regenerate making it more susceptible to age spots.”. “Young skin regenerates quickly, shedding old cells and replacing them with new ones. As we age, this turnover process slows down, meaning damaged cells (including those with excess melanin) linger longer on the skin's surface.". Margot adds that mature skin produces less collagen, which causes the skin "to become thinner and less able to repair itself, making age spots more noticeable". How to manage and treat age spots. Consistent sun protection First and foremost, it is important to prioritise sun protection."One of the most crucial and effective steps in managing age spots is practising consistent sun protection. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and apply it generously to all exposed skin every two hours, especially if spending time outdoors.” Treatments If you don't want to undergo harsher dermatological treatments like dermabrasion and chemical peels Margot recommends using topical solutions like Vitamin C serums, which can brighten the skin by reducing melanin production.
