Caption: Nepal Floods: Hundreds Feared Trapped in Tunnels as Death Toll Tops 900. The death toll from last week’s devastating floods in Nepal has risen to 903, while the number of people reported missing has nearly doubled to 4,247, according to authorities. The disaster began Wednesday after a glacier collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border unleashed torrents of water, ice, rock and mud across communities in the Himalayan region. Among those missing are 592 foreign nationals, including about 85 Americans, according to Nepalese authorities and the US State Department. Rescue teams are facing particularly difficult conditions as they search for hundreds of workers believed to be trapped inside tunnels at hydropower projects in Rasuwa and Nuwakot. Officials estimate that 933 hydropower workers are unaccounted for, with many feared trapped behind tonnes of mud and debris inside the tunnels. Nepalese rescuers, assisted by experts from India and China, are using excavators, controlled explosions and other equipment to try to clear blocked passages and reach survivors. The floods have also severely damaged roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure, leaving large areas difficult to access and complicating the delivery of aid.
