Russia launched a new wave of drone attacks across Ukraine hours after Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky met in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The attacks hit Kyiv and the Zaporizhzhia region, causing deaths and injuries as well as damage to residential areas, businesses and critical infrastructure. Ukrainian authorities said at least 161 Russian drones were detected during the overnight attacks, with several targeting the capital. In Kyiv, the strikes damaged petrol stations, residential areas and business buildings, while a drone also hit near the EU delegation’s offices in the city. Russia also struck a shopping centre in Zaporizhzhia, as Moscow continued its aerial campaign against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. The attacks came after Trump and Zelensky discussed possible steps to de-escalate the war, including a potential truce covering energy infrastructure. Zelensky said Ukraine remains ready to stop attacks on Russian energy facilities if Moscow also halts strikes on Ukraine’s electricity, heating and water supplies. The escalation comes as world leaders gather in New York, with Zelensky due to address the UN General Assembly and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov scheduled to meet US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
