Headline: UNCAPTIONED: Trump Administration Targets Immigrant Truck Drivers in Licensing Crackdown

Caption: Trump Administration Targets Immigrant Truck Drivers in Licensing Crackdown. The government is intensifying its crackdown on immigrant truck drivers, seeking access to state licensing data to identify drivers whose commercial credentials may have been improperly issued or are no longer valid. The Departments of Homeland Security and Transportation are also closing trucking schools, detaining immigrant drivers and stepping up enforcement of rules regarding proficiency in English. Around 200,000 immigrants hold commercial driver’s licenses in the US, representing about 5% of the country’s truck-driving workforce. The administration has cited several fatal crashes involving noncitizen drivers in its push for tougher oversight, arguing that stricter enforcement is necessary to improve road safety. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has ordered the closure of nearly 300 commercial-driving schools over alleged failures to meet safety, training and English-language requirements. The campaign has provoked a confrontation with Democratic-led states, which accuse the federal government of overstepping its authority and seeking access to sensitive licensing information. More than 20 states have sued the administration, while a federal judge has temporarily blocked its request for nationwide access to the Commercial Driver’s License Information System. The measures could further reduce the pool of truck drivers at a time when the industry is already facing shortages, prompting the administration to encourage veterans to enter the profession.
