Caption: Study Links Heavy Alcohol Consumption To Brain Damage And Increased Stroke Risk. A new study published in the journal Neurology highlights the dangers of heavy alcohol consumption linking it to more severe brain bleeds and earlier long-term brain damage .Researchers define heavy drinking as consuming three or more drinks per day. Dr. Mitchell Elkind, chief science officer at the American Heart Association, explained that bleeding strokes, or intracerebral hemorrhages, occur when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures, causing serious damage. While ischemic strokes, caused by blockages, are more common, bleeding strokes tend to be more dangerous and disabling. Dr. M. Edip Gurol, the study’s lead author, found that individuals who drank an average of three glasses daily had brain bleeds 11 years earlier than those who drank less. With 17% of adults in the US binge drinking and 6% drinking heavily, experts are urging caution as heavy drinking significantly raises the risk of both stroke and long-term cognitive decline.
