Caption: Cancer Treatment May Work Better Depending On Time Of Day. New research suggests the time of day cancer treatment is given may significantly affect how well it works. In a recent study, researchers grouped patients with the same type of lung cancer and gave them identical immunotherapy treatments. The only difference was timing. Half received their medication before 3 p.m., while the rest were treated later in the day. The results were striking. Patients treated earlier experienced, on average, five additional months before their cancer progressed and lived nearly a year longer than those treated later. They were also more likely to still be alive at the end of the study, which has now run for more than two years. Scientists have long studied the body’s internal clock, or circadian rhythm, which controls hormones, sleep, body temperature and metabolism. More recently, researchers have found the immune system appears especially sensitive to timing. Previous studies have already shown that timing can influence vaccine effectiveness and surgical outcomes. The new study, led by researchers in China, is the first to test this effect directly in cancer treatment, reinforcing earlier findings that immunotherapy may be most effective when given earlier in the day.
