Caption: Justice Department Seeks to Vacate Bannon Conviction Over Jan. 6 Subpoena. The U.S. Justice Department moved to erase the criminal conviction of longtime Trump adviser Steve Bannon for defying a subpoena from the House Jan. 6 committee. In a motion signed by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, the department asked a federal judge to dismiss the two-count indictment brought against Bannon in 2021. Bannon was convicted in 2022 after a jury trial overseen by Carl Nichols, a Trump appointee, on charges of criminal contempt of Congress. The charges stemmed from Bannon’s refusal to comply with a subpoena from the Jan. 6 select committee, convened by then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Although Bannon already served a four-month prison sentence in 2024, dismissing the case could end his pending Supreme Court appeal and wipe out the jury conviction. Solicitor General John Sauer confirmed the Justice Department sought to erase lower-court rulings upholding Bannon’s conviction. Another Trump adviser, Peter Navarro, who was also convicted for defying the Jan. 6 committee, said he did not want similar action taken in his case. The move came as scrutiny intensified over Bannon’s ties to Jeffrey Epstein, revealed in newly released Justice Department documents.
