Caption: Norway's New King Haakon VIII Sworn In Following Harald V's Death. Norway’s new monarch, King Haakon VIII, has pledged allegiance to the country's Constitution in parliament following the death of his father, King Harald V. Harald died on Friday at the age of 89 after a 35-year reign, with Haakon automatically succeeding him as monarch. The 53-year-old new king has adopted the royal motto "All for Norway.” Haakon travelled from the royal palace to the Storting in an open car before taking the constitutional oath. Parliament Speaker Masud Gharahkhani formally announced Harald's death and Haakon's succession before the king took the oath. Queen Mette-Marit missed the ceremony because of complications following her lung transplant and remained under medical observation. Harald’s coffin is lying in the royal palace chapel in Oslo, where the public can pay their respects ahead of his funeral on September 9. Haakon became king immediately upon his father's death, with no coronation planned, as Norway abolished coronations in 1908.
