Caption: Four ways you might be hindering your weight-loss journey. Losing weight can be difficult for a number of reasons, including fad diets that do more harm than good. Dr Charlotte Norton, Chief Medical Officer of The Slimming Clinic, the UK's largest online weight loss clinic, explains how you could be holding yourself back. Buying low-fat products Reaching for the low-fat products in the supermarket is a "huge mistake", according to Dr Norton. ”Whilst many of these products may be low in fat, they're full of sugar to compensate. This is true of low-fat yoghurts, cereal bars, and even ready meals. This means you're not only increasing your intake of sugar, but you're also more likely to feel hungry and therefore end up eating more.” Not eating enough protein Protein should be an essential part of your diet if you're trying to lose weight. ”Protein not only makes you feel fuller for longer, curbing carb highs and lows, it also fuels fat burning and promotes muscle growth and repair. You don't have to simply source your protein from meat either, other good protein sources include eggs, dairy, nuts and seeds.” Following online trends If you're looking for an effective diet, steer clear of social media trends, which can often do more harm than good. ”Whether it's the cabbage soup diet, or the baby food diet, or the banana-only diet, the internet is awash with weird diet trends.” "Most of these faddy diets are not supported by clinical studies or led by doctors, and usually any weight you may lose in the first couple of days will be quickly put back on because they are not sustainable and are unhealthy.” Not getting enough sleep Aim for eight hours of sleep per night to stay in control of your appetite. ”Getting enough sleep is vital for weight loss because sleep helps to regulate the hormones that control hunger and appetite. Lack of sleep may also suppress fat oxidation, which is when fat cells are broken down into energy.” Instructions: THIS VIDEO MUST NOT BE EDITED FOR LENGTH TO COMBINE WITH OTHER CONTENT
