Caption: Zelensky Proposes Face-To-Face Talks With Putin. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, proposing a face-to-face meeting in a renewed effort to end the war. In an open letter, Zelensky said it would be wrong to wait for the conflict to regain the full attention of the United States and urged immediate negotiations. The Ukrainian leader also proposed a full ceasefire for the duration of any talks, although Putin rejected that idea earlier in the day. The Kremlin confirmed it had received the letter and said Putin would be briefed on its contents. Zelensky suggested the two leaders could meet in a neutral country such as Switzerland or Turkey to discuss a path toward peace. Putin said he remained willing to reach an agreement but repeated Russia’s demands that Ukraine abandon territory claimed by Moscow and drop its NATO ambitions. Ukraine has rejected any territorial concessions, arguing they would encourage future Russian aggression. U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed the proposal, saying it would be “great” if Zelensky and Putin met and urging both sides to make compromises to end the war.
