Caption: Contract Cancellations and Funding Cuts Hit Defence Tech Sector in the UK. A growing number of British defence technology companies are reporting financial hardship as the government continues to delay publication of its long-promised Defence Investment Plan. Such plan was originally expected last autumn but remains unpublished a year after the Strategic Defence Review called for a major military rebuild. The delay is largely due to ongoing negotiations between the Ministry of Defence and the Treasury over future spending levels, leaving businesses uncertain about upcoming contracts. A survey by techUK found that 73% of defence technology firms believe business conditions have worsened since the review was published. The same proportion reported contract suspensions or cancellations in the past six months, while 87% said they had experienced funding delays or cuts. Many companies are also waiting for decisions on contract extensions, creating concerns about cash flow and long-term planning. Industry leaders say the uncertainty is slowing investment, limiting expansion, and making it harder to develop new technologies and capabilities. Although ministers are expected to unveil the investment plan soon, firms warn that the prolonged delay has already damaged confidence across the sector and could affect future defence readiness.
