Caption: Expert warns against the risks of 'binge tanning’. Regular sunbed use is a potentially deadly beauty trend among Gen Z consumers, with a recent survey by Melanoma Focus finding that sunbed usage among 18 to 25-year-olds has increased to 43%. In response to the statistics, Aesthetic Practitioner, Dr Nyla Raja, the founder of Dr Nyla Medispa, has explained the risks of 'binge tanning’. "Of all the beauty trends to make a re-emergence, the reported increase in sunbed 'binge-tanning' is the most concerning and dangerous.” "As a healthcare professional who has spent much of my career educating my peers and patients about the potential (and deadly) health risks of sunbed use, I find the findings of this report shocking.” "Like most technology, sunbeds have become more powerful over time, but unfortunately no less dangerous.” In addition to aesthetic issues such as premature ageing and hyperpigmentation, sunbed use can also increase the risk of skin cancer. According to research cited by skin cancer charity Skcin (www.skcin.org), using sunbeds for the first time before the age of 35 increases the risk of developing melanoma skin cancer by 59% while regular sunbed use under the age of 30 increases the risk of skin cancer by 75%. ”When you also consider that the intensity of UV rays in some sunbeds can be more than 10 times stronger than the midday Mediterranean sun, then you start to get a picture of exactly what the risks to skin health can be.” The cosmetic doctor goes on to explain the importance of protecting your skin. ”The skin is the body's largest organ, and arguably one of its most important as it's largely unprotected and exposed to various environmental aggressors on a daily basis. It's important we look after it, yet it is often the organ we disregard the most from a health perspective.” "Education is absolutely key, and I would encourage all women to educate themselves about the potential risks and whether the perceived short-term 'benefits' outweigh the long-term effects to their looks and their health.” Instructions: THIS VIDEO MUST NOT BE EDITED FOR LENGTH TO COMBINE WITH OTHER CONTENT
