Caption: A nutritionist's guide to drinking alcohol this festive season. Drinking alcohol can affect your wellbeing in several ways, including your gut health. Adrienne Benjamin, Nutritionist at ProVen Probiotics, has created a guide to maintaining good gut health while enjoying the festive season. Stay hydrated. First and foremost, if you are drinking alcohol, it is vital that you keep hydrated by drinking water in between your alcoholic drinks. Drink in moderation. If you are indulging in alcohol, try to do it in moderation, as too much booze can have a negative impact on your gut. Choose your drink wisely. When choosing your beverage, try to avoid drinks which are filled with sugar and artificial sweeteners. ”Or opt for red wine, which is full of flavonoids and has been suggested to have some benefits for the microbiome when drunk in moderation.” Eat gut-supporting food. Before you embark on a night of drinking, make sure you eat a healthy, gut-supporting meal an hour or two before you leave the house. According to Adrienne, the meal should include lots of vegetables, particularly leafy greens, and a good portion of protein, such as chicken, fish, eggs, turkey, nuts, seeds, beans, pulses and seafood. Take supplements. Supplements can be a great way to look after your gut health. Probiotics, support a balanced microbiome and can help to ensure our gut bacteria are able to perform their key functions such as metabolising certain substances (including alcohol), supporting immune function and maintaining digestive function.” THIS VIDEO MUST NOT BE EDITED FOR LENGTH TO COMBINE WITH OTHER CONTENT
