Caption: Patrick McHenry Will Not Seek Reelection. The GOP representative, who served as speaker pro tempore following Kevin McCarthy's ousting, made the announcement on Dec. 5, CNN reports. "I will be retiring from Congress at the end of my current term. I believe there is a season for everything and—for me—this season has come to an end." "I look forward to what comes next for my family and me." , Patrick McHenry, via X. McHenry was an ally of McCarthy, making known his disgust for the way in which the former speaker was removed by violently banging the speaker's gavel. "What I didn't recognize was the emotion of the moment, and that's what came out — just the emotion and a level of anger about the position that we would be in.", Patrick McHenry, to the Washington Examiner. He played a key role in helping McCarthy to secure the position in the first place, CNN reports. McHenry also served as a top negotiator for GOP House members in procuring a deal with the White House to avoid national default. At the time of his appointment when he was 29 in 2004, McHenry was one of the youngest lawmakers to ever be elected. He is currently serving his 10th term. "Whether [it's] 1974, 1994, or 2010, we've seen the House evolve over time. Evolutions are often lumpy and disjointed but at each stage, new leaders emerge. There are many smart and capable members who remain, and others are on their way. I'm confident the House is in good hands.", Patrick McHenry, via statement.
