Caption: WHO Warns Ebola Vaccine Could Take Nine Months As Outbreak Worsens. World Health Organization says it could take up to nine months before a vaccine against the current Ebola strain is ready. Two potential vaccines targeting the Bundibugyo species are being developed, but neither has yet undergone clinical trials. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said there are now 600 suspected Ebola cases and 139 suspected deaths. Officials warned the numbers are likely to rise because the virus was not immediately detected. So far, 51 cases have been confirmed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and two in Uganda. The WHO has declared the outbreak an international public health emergency, though it says the situation is not at pandemic level. Healthcare workers are among the dead, while hospitals in affected areas say they are overwhelmed and lack adequate protective equipment. The UK government has pledged up to £20 million to help contain the outbreak through frontline support, infection control and disease surveillance.
