Tyler Robinson, 23, has pleaded not guilty to the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, as a Utah judge ruled prosecutors can seek the death penalty. Robinson denies aggravated murder and six other charges over the fatal shooting of Kirk at Utah Valley University on 10 September 2025. Turning Point USA co-founder Kirk, 31, was shot in the neck while speaking at a campus event in Orem, Utah. Prosecutors said DNA allegedly linked Robinson to the rifle and other items recovered after the shooting, while citing alleged admissions and video evidence. Prosecutors argued that firing towards Kirk while he was surrounded by a crowd, including children, was among the aggravating factors supporting a capital trial. Defence lawyers challenged the prosecution's evidence and unsuccessfully sought to have the death penalty removed from consideration. Kirk’s widow Erika Kirk and his parents attended the hearing, with the family calling the judge's decision an important step in their "pursuit of justice.” Robinson is due back in court on 23 October, when a date for his trial is expected to be set.
