Caption: Remembering George Floyd, Five Years After His Death. Commemorations were held across the U.S. to mark five years since George Floyd was killed by police in Minneapolis, sparking global protests. In Houston, Floyd’s hometown, his family gathered near his grave for a memorial service led by Rev Al Sharpton. Meanwhile, Minneapolis hosted a gospel concert and church service as part of its annual Rise and Remember Festival at George Floyd Square. Floyd’s aunt, Angela Harrelson, urged the public to keep fighting for justice and reform, saying the movement must continue. Floyd was murdered in 2020 by Officer Derek Chauvin, who knelt on his neck for over nine minutes during an arrest. The act was captured on video and triggered a worldwide reckoning with systemic racism and police violence. Chauvin is now serving a 22-year sentence. Other officers involved were also convicted for failing to stop the killing. Following Floyd’s death, the U.S. Department of Justice launched investigations into multiple police departments, including in Minneapolis and Louisville. Under President Biden, agreements were reached for reforms and oversight. But the Trump administration now claims those efforts are flawed. Trump has also dismantled federal diversity and inclusion policies, calling them a distraction, and has removed Black Lives Matter symbols from public spaces. A mural of Floyd in Houston was recently destroyed in a building demolition, adding to concerns about fading momentum. A recent Pew survey found that 72% of Americans feel there’s been little to no progress in racial equality since Floyd’s death.
