Nestled in Mezzegra, Tremezzina, the Palazzo Brentano dates to the seventeenth century and belonged to one of the most influential families of Lake Como. The Brentano family were a group of merchants who emigrated to Northern Europe during the Spanish occupation of Lombardy. Later, they returned to the lake, with the income of their successful trades. Today, Palazzo Brentano still retains all its elegant charm, and part of its building is currently used as a city hall, where the renowned Italian painter Giulio Quaglio's ceiling frescos can be seen. Sara Zanotta, CEO of Lakeside Real Estate, said: “Mezzegra is one of the most authentic and traditional districts (‘borgo’) of Lake Como: living at Palazzo Brentano means you're truly part of a community, surrounded by friendly Italian local families.” However, the narrow street on which the property resides features a black cross marking the precise spot where Italy’s Fascist leader Benito Mussolini was killed together with his lover Claretta Petacci. Mussolini was executed by anti-Fascist partisans in April 1945 after he was captured attempting to flee to Switzerland.
