Caption: Three self-care techniques to manage period pain. If you experience uncomfortable periods, there are a few simple changes you can make to deal with the symptoms. Many women experience a range of symptoms during their period, including fatigue, painful cramps, mood swings, disrupted sleep and more. If you are struggling with uncomfortable symptoms, naturopath and herbalist Siobhan Carroll (avogel.co.uk) presents three self-care techniques to help you throughout your menstrual cycle. Reducing stress According to Siobhan, stress can often exacerbate period pain and premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms, and research has shown that women with PMS are generally more reactive to stress. "Practicing self-care is a great start. And that can look different for everyone. Techniques like meditation, yoga, or breathing exercises can all help you reduce stress and promote relaxation." She also recommends spending time outdoors and using herbal remedies such as passiflora, lemon balm, avena sativa and valerian to reduce anxiety and stress. Improving sleep Sleep is essential for the functioning of our bodies, including our menstrual cycles. "Research finds that women with period pain tend to have disrupted sleep, and any changes in our circadian rhythm can also throw our cycle off. Establishing a bedtime routine, as well as going to bed at the same time every night, can help you get better quality sleep." The expert also advises going outside every day, eating your last meal at least two hours before bedtime, and not using your devices for at least an hour before hitting the hay. If you're after a herbal sleep remedy, Siobhan suggests A. Vogel's Dormeasan Sleep, which contains valerian and hops. Managing pain Menstrual cramps are common and can be unbearable for some women. "They are also often a big sign from our body that we need to slow down. Incorporating self-care techniques, such as applying a hot water bottle to your lower abdomen or taking a warm bath, can help alleviate pain and make you feel more comfortable." For period pain, she recommends valerian, which also reduces stress and aids sleep, and agnus castus, which can help with hormone imbalances.
