Caption: Antonelli Becomes Youngest F1 World Champion In History. Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli became the youngest Formula 1 world champion in history after finishing third at the Mexico City Grand Prix. At 20 years and 68 days, the Italian broke Sebastian Vettel's record by more than three years and secured his first F1 drivers' title. Antonelli also became the first Italian F1 world champion since Alberto Ascari won the title in 1953. Red Bull's Max Verstappen won the race after holding off Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, with less than a second separating them at the finish. Antonelli entered the race needing only ninth place to guarantee the championship regardless of the results of Hamilton and Mercedes teammate George Russell. The race was red-flagged after Valtteri Bottas crashed following a suspension failure, before a later safety car caused another interruption. Antonelli moved into third after passing Ferrari's Charles Leclerc following the restart and remained behind Verstappen and Hamilton to the finish. An emotional Antonelli thanked Mercedes and his family after securing the championship, saying the moment would "live forever”.
