Headline: RAW VIDEO: Rescued Sea Turtles Return To Gulf Waters After Rehabilitation
Caption: After weeks of expert care, 24 cold-stunned green sea turtles and a loggerhead that had been recovering since last Autumn have been released back into the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The sea turtles, ranging from 3 to 35 pounds, were part of a coordinated release effort involving Houston Zoo’s sea turtle team, Texas A&M University Galveston’s Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research, and the Galveston Island Park Board. So far this year, 102 sea turtles have been rescued from cold-stunning events along the upper Texas coast, stretching from the Louisiana border to Matagorda Bay. Many suffered from frostbite, eye trauma, and infections, requiring specialised treatment at the Houston Zoo. While some were released earlier, the latest group of 25 turtles - including two green sea turtles and a loggerhead fitted with satellite trackers - were cleared for release after careful evaluation by veterinarians. The transmitters will allow researchers to monitor their movements in the wild.
