For the first time in a decade, Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party lost its majority in parliament. The party is now dependent on regional allies to secure the half-way mark required to stay on top of the world's largest democracy. Since taking power a decade ago, Modi has been ruling as the alliance's unquestioned leader, however, his opponents have seen his reign as the country sliding towards authoritarianism. "My sole issue with Modi today is that he has become larger than the party itself. In a democratic system... a party should always supersede an individual.", Surendra Kumar Dwivedi, Former head of the Department of Political Science at Lucknow University, via Reuters. The election win makes Modi only the second Indian leader to win a third term after founding Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Prior to the election win, Modi promised a transformative next five years in office. Reuters reports that Modi's presidency has seen India become the world's fastest growing major economy, and he has expressed aspirations of improving on those gains.
