Tesla’s early investor Ross Gerber has called on Elon Musk to step down as CEO unless he gives up his new government role, in an interview with Sky News. Gerber told Sky’s Business Live that Musk’s work as head of President Donald Trump’s new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is too “divisive” and has distracted him from Tesla. “It’s time for somebody to run Tesla,” Gerber said. “Either Elon should come back and be CEO, or focus on the government and appoint a suitable CEO.” Gerber also revealed he has sold a significant portion of his Tesla shares, citing Musk’s divided focus as one reason, along with broader issues in the business. Tesla has lost over $800bn in market value since December, with shares falling another 4% on Tuesday amid declining EV demand and rising competition. The company faces increased pressure from cheaper Chinese EVs and potential cost hikes due to Trump’s trade war, deepening investor concerns. Gerber accused Musk of neglecting Tesla since buying Twitter (now X) in 2022, saying his controversial posts and government role have harmed Tesla’s brand. “The company’s reputation has just been destroyed by Elon Musk,” Gerber said. “Sales are plummeting... because the CEO is so divisive.” Tesla continues to offer steep discounts to attract buyers, but even that has not reversed slowing sales in key markets. Gerber concluded Musk “only has 24 hours in a day” and warned Tesla is in crisis: “You can’t sell the best product because of who’s leading the company.” Instructions: THIS VIDEO MUST NOT BE EDITED FOR LENGTH TO COMBINE WITH OTHER CONTENT
