Headline: UNCAPTIONED: New York Democratic Politicians Arrested at ICE Jail Protest In Manhattan
Caption: New York Democratic politicians arrested at ICE jail protest in Manhattan. About a dozen New York state and city officials were arrested Thursday at a protest inside 26 Federal Plaza, where ICE operates detention cells recently ruled inhumane by a federal judge. Those detained included City Comptroller Brad Lander and 10 state lawmakers who sought entry to inspect the facility. Public Advocate Jumaane Williams led another protest outside, where demonstrators blocked the garage entrance chanting “Immigrants are welcome here”. Organizers said more than 75 people were detained overall, while DHS put the figure at 71. The arrests mark the latest clash between Democratic officials and the immigration policies of President Donald Trump. A June protest saw Lander detained at the same building, while in May Rep. LaMonica McIver and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka were also arrested at an ICE facility in New Jersey. ICE officials accused Lander and others of obstructing law enforcement, prompting a lockdown after a bomb threat was called in. The protests came a day after a federal judge ordered improvements to detention conditions, citing overcrowding, lack of hygiene, and degrading treatment. ICE said detainees include individuals facing deportation for crimes such as drug trafficking, weapons offenses, and repeated security violations near the White House.
