Caption: Marjane Satrapi, Author of Persepolis, Dies at 56. French-Iranian author, illustrator and filmmaker Marjane Satrapi, best known for her autobiographical graphic novel Persepolis, has died at the age of 56, her family announced. Satrapi gained international acclaim by recounting her childhood during and after Iran's Islamic Revolution, turning a personal story of exile and identity into a globally influential work. In 2007, she co-directed the animated film adaptation of Persepolis, which won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and later received an Academy Award nomination. Living in France since the 1990s, she became one of the most prominent cultural critics of the Iranian regime and a vocal advocate for women's rights and democratic freedoms. In 2025, she rejected the Legion of Honour, denouncing France's "hypocrisy" toward Iran and its treatment of Iranian dissidents seeking visas. Beyond Persepolis, her acclaimed works included Embroideries, Chicken with Plums and the collective project Woman, Life, Freedom, inspired by the Iranian protest movement. Relatives said she died little more than a year after the death of her husband, producer and screenwriter Mattias Ripa, a loss that deeply affected her. In recent Instagram posts, she admitted that she has “lost the love” of her life. Her family points out that “grief” had played a major role in her emotional state as of late.
