Caption: Donkey Kong Could Have Been Named "Kong Dong" and Other Unusual Names. Eurogamer reports that Nintendo's iconic character Donkey Kong nearly had a very different name as revealed by 1983 court documents from a lawsuit between Universal and Nintendo. Alternative names considered included Kong Dong, Mr Kong, and Kong the Kong. The lawsuit accused Nintendo of infringing on Universal's King Kong trademark but the judge found Donkey Kong to be a non-infringing parody. The judge highlighted Donkey Kong's humorous antics as distinct from King Kong's ferocity. Today, Donkey Kong remains a beloved character with Donkey Kong Country Returns HD set to launch on Nintendo Switch in January 2025.
