Caption: Clegg Brands Starmer’s ‘Knee-Bending’ To Trump As Cringey. Former Deputy Prime Minister Sir Nick Clegg has criticised Sir Keir Starmer’s relationship with President Donald Trump calling it “embarrassing” and describing the prime minister’s “endless knee-bending” as “cringey.” Speaking at the Liberal Democrat conference, Clegg urged Starmer to speak up for British values, saying some of Trump’s actions should be challenged, including his lukewarm stance on Nato. Downing Street insists building a constructive relationship has already paid off pointing to progress on trade deals during Trump’s state visit last week which featured marching bands, a Red Arrows flypast, and a state banquet at Windsor Castle. Clegg argued the government is miscalculating by thinking the UK doesn’t have to choose between the US and the EU, calling that view “rubbish on stilts.” He also warned against becoming too reliant on American investment and technology, saying the relationship is changing “irrevocably.” Starmer, however, defended his approach, claiming the investment secured during Trump’s visit will boost jobs and drive growth across the country.
